Innate musicality
Last week Mort sent me a vid of a lady guitarist from a Botswana township which showed a complete understanding of her instrument.
I next found a vid of an armless Chinese boy who played the piano on a China Has Talent competition on Chinese TV – utterly amazing musically let alone from any other perspective.
Then on Friday night I saw Jamie Cullum in the 55th Prom of the season at the Royal Albert Hall with his band and the Heritage Orchestra – what a gas. This was a wild card prom and a surprise – I am glad that the programme is refreshed by these wild card concerts.
Lunatic pricing
Derrick, a loyal Guardian reader, was cross at being asked £1.69 each for four bottles of water at Manchester airport. Then he saw the sign: "Buy a Daily Telegraph and get a free bottle of water." So he bought four copies, threw them in the bin, and saved himself £2.76.

Last day in Cape Town
I tried in vain to reschedule our return at a reasonable price but no dice so we spent our last afternoon at Cellars Hohenort and it was idyllic.
We arrived back to a snow bound Heathrow and we did not get off the plane for an hour as the gangway was frozen and could not be connected. I had to venture into the cold and walk to the terminal – I was wearing a short sleeved shirt, shots and sandals! Our btaxi was waiting for us and our driver whisked us back to Salop. Great trip and thoroughly recommend anyone go to Cape Town which is an amazing, relaxed and friendly city – we will go back for sure.
If I can do the right deal i think we will be back for a longer period next winter – I am looking for a 2 month 1 bedroom apartment rental in the Camps Bay area with wifi of course. Seems a touch expensive from my research so far but will plod on. God it is cold and I don’t normally feel it but coming back from glorious weather you fell it more – I wish I was back there now and I don’t normally want to go back to a place I have been to on holiday always saying there is plenty of the world I have not seen yet!
Tory nondom spends a fortune
Latest figures from the Electoral Commission reveal that Zac Goldsmith, Tory candidate for Richmond Park, has spent more than a £250k of his own untaxed money in the hope of getting elected.
Thank goodness Lib Dems will not have to pay back donations…
made in 2005 totalling over £2.4 million, the Electoral Commission has said.
Britain’s Lib Dems had faced investigation over donations made by 5th Avenue Partners four years ago – the largest donations in the party’s history.
Had the watchdog concluded the donations did not cover existing rules it could have applied to a court to seek forfeiture of the money.
But 5th Avenue Partners was deemed to be a legitimate company under the Companies act 1985, and Michael Brown, the prominent Lib Dem donor and convict, was not deemed to have paid the money as an individual.
Electoral Commission chair Jenny Watson said: "We have conducted a thorough investigation into these particular donations to the Liberal Democrats, and considered a substantial body of evidence: evidence from the criminal proceedings against Michael Brown; documents obtained from the City of London police, including analysis by forensic accountants; and evidence provided by the party.
"Having considered all the evidence in this case, we have concluded that 5th Avenue Partners Limited met the requirements to be a permissible donor. The Electoral Commission will be taking no further action in this case."
