English Cricket’s First Huzzah – finally, they’re winning.
This article gave me cause to be hopeful!

These are unsettling days for fans of the England cricket team. It’s not so much that they’ve started winning—the team has enjoyed regular spasms of adequacy over the years, apparently designed to repeatedly lull those of us who follow them into bouts of risible overconfidence. It’s more the games they’ve started to win, and the way they’re winning them.
The real shock came on May 16, when England won the third edition of the World Twenty20 in Barbados. At the premier international competition in the shortest, newest and most action-packed format of the game, they didn’t lose a single match, beating old enemy Australia in the final. It was the first major international multiteam tournament England has ever won—in 35 years of them. They have since pulled off a One-Day International (the medium-length version) series victory against those same Aussies, something that also just doesn’t happen very often.
