Hi Colin,
I would like to raise one point in regards to this, it is a total myth that after Scotland becomes independent, that the rest of the UK, would constantly have a conservative govt. Only one Labour govt has had to rely on its Scottish MP's to form a govt at Westminster

Hi Colin,
Good point, as a partial Scot I think they, ie Alex, has got it wrong.
Raises too many unanswered issues, like who gets to vote, is it only people living in Scotland on a particular day? do Scots living abroad get a say? or are they banished because they chose USA, Australia, NZ etc as a place to go and work and live, and so it goes on.
I think the biggest risk is they are inviting the English, whoever they may be, to have their own referendum to declare independence from Scotland. My gut feel is that at the moment they would vote the Scots out in flash! Very funny if Alex's referendum votes to stay in.
On your friends logic can't see why Cameron is resisting.
By the way you will have gathered my E-mail is working again but I know not why or how.

Brilliant

How old is the oldest Labor MP? - any chance of a by-election? - that would certainly spice it up especially if another independent were elected!

I suspect Gillard would personally prefer to introduce legislation that enables the poker machine punter to acknowledge an amount of risk before they embark on a session of gambling; even the polls suggest nationally we are in support of the legislation.

Sadly, the Clubs industry together with the opposition has run an effective campaign suggesting it is un-Australian, it’s more nanny state, it will affect jobs and it will affect donations to charities and sporting events.

I think Gillard has concluded if the legislation continues its passage through parliament it won’t succeed and will do damage to the re-election of various Labor members. I’m doubtful about this and wonder if it won’t turn out to be seen as another backflip by a weak populist government similar to the climate change decision that undid Rudd.

Further I figure in her pragmatic way she reached this conclusion along while ago and is one of the reasons the deal over the speaker was sorted late last year; at least it gave her a smidgen of room to manoeuvre.

So clearly “When is a coalition promise a promise or a subterfuge” is when it must be pragmatic to do so. This government is all about staying in power no matter the cost to principle. So very disappointing!

The next election is due by November 2013, Gillard will try to stay as long as possible in the hope her stocks will improve and or the opposition fall over somehow. I can’t see there being a coup against Gillard despite the appalling polls.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choi_Sung-Bong

On June 6, 2011, Choi's outstanding performance of "Nella Fantasia" moved judges and audience members. Choi took to the stage appearing unfit for the part. Sporting a bowl haircut and a flannel shirt, he introduced himself as a manual laborer, who had made a living selling gum and energy drinks for ten years.[1] Choi advanced to the final of the competition, finishing second by 280 votes.[4]

During his first appearance, in replying to a judge's question on whether he had vocal training, Choi said he studied on his own but took master classes whenever he had opportunities. His full answer was edited to make his story more appealing for TV. His formal training and musical background was mentioned on the show, however. The facts were immediately pointed out in a story on the Internet version of Time Magazine.[5] Time also noted that Paul Potts, who won Britain's Got Talent (BGT) and was described as a mobile telephone salesman, had sung amateur opera, had performed with a small group connected with the Royal Philharmonic that toured Italy, and had paid for a master class with Luciano Pavarotti, but was still an amateur as he had never been paid for singing before his appearance on BGT. According to Time, Susan Boyle also recorded a charity CD before her appearance on BGT. In any event, Choi's performance is considered the first talent discovery of note from the Korean version of the show.[by whom?]

The good lord moves in mysterious ways. It never stops amazing me, the resilience of young people to cope with the amount of sh*t the world throws at them. What a remarkable story, I will definitely show this to my students at school.
